I don’t paint what the world is. I paint what it could be. Each painting becomes a world of its own, suspended between coming together and drifting apart.

I take my painting practice seriously, but it’s important that the paintings don’t take themselves too seriously. The work usually gets into trouble whenever it tries too hard to be important or arrives at an answer too quickly. The paintings that feel most alive are the ones that stay curious the longest. They wander, second guess themselves, stumble into awkward moments, and occasionally surprise both of us.

I always find it interesting how each color, shape, and gesture changes the conditions for the next decision. Some elements seem perfectly content together. Others bicker. And a few outright revolt. My hope is that I can stay with the conversation until the painting discovers its own sense of coherence.

Rather than searching for a single idea or clean resolution, I’m interested in seeing what happens when a painting stays open long enough for something unexpected to emerge. Over time, the surface becomes a record of the work itself: discoveries, revisions, spectacular failures, and the small decisions that gradually reshape the painting as it unfolds.

My hope is that the viewer will spend some time with a painting without trying to solve it, and simply see what unfolds.

“That’s what I’m interested in, the space in between the moment of imagining what is possible and yet not knowing what that is.” –Julie Mehretu
